The pace is very slow, but it fits with what she is demanding of him. At least there is no slow motion here and she goes take a pretty good pounding during the doggy. On the other hand, it might be nice if we could see some of the action the flick ends. They go through the motions in and around the car. In the back room, Wanda Curtis is working on Mark Davis when Ashlyn comes in. (there is a dual identity thing going on here, but it's not important to give away.) Mood is one thing, but this is just ridiculous. There is good energy and I don't mind the dom edge to it, though it's Kylie's boots that I find most appealing. The whole experience leaves Ashlyn in a jealous rage, perhaps pointing the finger at her for Kylie's murder. Savage and Bune go undercover at the strip club to further investigate. This leads to another back room three way with Wanda, Ashlyn and Herschel. The fact that she doesn't seem to mind performing in front of her boss and former lover might indicate that Ashlyn has a twin or a split personality. Tyce joins the party right around time that Wanda is getting Herschel's cock out of his pants. That leaves Gere free to swallow Tyce to the root with total ease. The camera moves back and forth between the two couples, with Ashlyn showing a lot better energy than Wanda. Kylie is turning in some of her best performances in some time these days, though the low lighting hurt both of her scenes. Ginger's scene is hot at the close of the movie and a couple of Ashlyn's trysts work as well. Wanda is mostly wasted and the Alex Foxe scene didn't work for me at all. Too often, the low lighting and shadows got in the way of the sex, but that's the style Hart was going for. (and yes, I know how difficult it is to light a scene this way, I just don't think it's worth the effort in the long run.) As always, each position or option gives you two angles from which to choose, and for the most part, VCA has done a nice job of providing angles which are both aesthetically pleasing and still give you the perspective that “you” are the one having sex with Ginger. One nice addition that I haven’t noticed on the previous Fantasex titles that I have viewed is the cumshot option, which essentially allows you to deliver your cumshot anywhere you desire. You can give Ginger a facial, but you can also cum inside her mouth if you so choose. You can squirt it on her ass, or you can give her an internal pop-shot. Granted, it’s hard to tell if the internal ones are “faked” or not – but this addition adds a level to the interactive experience that most other virtual titles haven’t featured as of yet. Of course, the gorgeous headshot of Ginger Lynn on the eye-catching cover mighty tempt you to add this DVD to your "classics" collection, but I wouldn't bother. In fact, the comeback starlet of TAKEN and WHITE LIGHTNING only has one single scene where she dances around, then masturbates...and that's it. She looks great in a pseudo-FLASHDANCE outfit, and her bumping and grinding and dildo prodding are all sufficiently spank-worthy, but this video needs more of her doing something to somebody to justify its worth. Even the most hardcore of Lynn fans (and I am one of them) would hesitate on picking this one up. The remainder of the video is divided into eight chapters, including several interludes of girl-girl play between video hostesses Erica Boyer and a blonde who I couldn't identify for the life of me. (The lack of fully detailed credits make it difficult to determine who's who in this film, and the fuzzy video certainly doesn't help.) Each scene begins with some pseudo-dirty dancing, which is far less erotic than anything Jennifer Beals (or her double) has ever done on film, and looks downright laughable most of the time. Since I actually "grew up" on early eighties porn, I am usually more tolerant of this kind of unimaginative, cheesy material than most of my critical peers. However, DANCE FEVER fails to rise above the average when it comes to direction and presentation, and the hardcore itself is unredeemingly dull. The uncredited director attempts to serve up some variations of the dancing theme, including a bondage segment where some dark-haired mistress (whom I did recognize as being Lynn Rae) teases and taunts her helplessly bound guy while gyrating throughout. However, as with the other couplings, these two have very little chemistry together, so all you get is your average, run-of-the-mill, robotic suck and fuck. Alexa also shares a teasing girl-girl scene with Misty Reagan (a tall and somewhat sexy brunette), only to be interrupted by John Stagliano, who is dressed in a white outfit clearly leftover from SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER. Things get unintentionally comical as they dance around absurdly in some anonymous room, but we are eventually spared any further moments of awkwardness once they finally start having sex. While the performers do their best to generate to arouse the viewer, they are seriously hampered by poor camera work. In one personally revealing (and foretelling) shot, Misty sticks a dildo up Stagliano's ass while he fucks Alexa. It's not too explicit, nor does it go on for very long, but it also adds nothing to what is essentially a nothing scene. I suppose that if I had to pick one hot scene out of the bunch, it would be the orgy finale where the very sexy Gina Valentino stands out among participants Erica Boyer, Karen Summer, Francois Papillon, Steve Drake and Greg Rome and Marc Wallice (apparently billed here as Shawn Tee). However, we don't get to see Gina at her performance best, since the camera has to give the other players equal time. Even more unfortunate is the fact that Miss Valentino is so under-represented on DVD, eighties fans really have no choice other than to pick up mediocrities like DANCE FEVER to get a digital glimpse of her sexual legacy. But if you were to ask me, I would still wait for her better movies (like GINGER'S PRIVATE PARTY and TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE) to come out on DVD before choosing this one under review. The video quality is just about as good as it can get for what is clearly (or not so clearly) a blurry, washed-out, defect-ridden videotape master. I'm sure LBO Entertainment did their damnedest to coax the best possible picture from this third-rate production, and they certainly do a better job at digitally transferring their videos than a studio like VCX, but it doesn't make DANCE FEVER any more watchable. The soundtrack is mainly composed of generic, synthesized music which is considerably worse than the most wretched Top 40 hits heard during the Reagan Administration. Some gasping, moaning and crying can be heard above the strident, third-rate muzak, but it's not enough to make you want to blast the so-called "AC-3 Stereo Sound" (which, for you non-audiophiles out there is merely another name for two-channel Dolby Digital) through your home theatre. Just keep the "mute" button close to your thumb. There are virtually no extras available on DANCE FEVER, unless you count a few chapter selections and a "Play Movie" option, so don't bother looking for any. Though I have to offer kudos to LBO for giving new fans a taste of the old stuff on DVD, I still can't recommend this movie. DANCE FEVER is a piece of porn fluff which ran its course many, many years ago. Those brilliant business decisions pay off in spades in Devon Stripped, easily the best feature film to be produced by Digital Playground, and one that is bound to have Devon mentioned in the same breath as Jenna Jameson and Tera Patrick when it comes to the elite adult actresses working in the industry today. We’ve all seen Devon perform before – her compilation DVDs are among the best selling in the industry. But thanks to Nic Andrews great direction, he also shows us a Devon that can act, as well as knock us out with her sexual energy – and whether it’s the ability of Andrews to pull performances out of his talent, or Devon showing off some thespian skills that she never got a chance to show before on film, this is one performance that should be remembered come award time next year. But Devon isn’t the only one who shines in Devon Stripped – both Ginger Lynn and Herschel Savage also give great supporting performances, and when you combine those with what Devon does in this film, add a great script and Andrews’ ability to shoot an adult movie like a mainstream motion picture, the result is one of the best features ever produced in the adult industry. But to call this movie a simple “porno” would be an insult to those who put it together. It’s a movie – with a beginning, middle and end – and those just looking to whack-off should go looking elsewhere. Yes, there’s plenty of sex in Devon Stripped, but its action that is a logical result of the storyline – not something thrown in so fans can get their “jollys”. Devon Stripped reminds one of those old classics (with a 21st century look, of course) where plot still mattered and the ultimate goal was to make something both erotic and meaningful. Devon stars as Annette, a young aspiring actress who is going on a lot of casting calls, winds up showing a lot of skin, but is still not getting any work. She’s best friends with Wanda (Ginger Lynn), whom she is surprised to find out makes her extra money by stripping. Devon is repulsed by the idea at first, but after Ginger double-dares her to check out the club where she works at (I was hoping Ginger would give Devon the dreaded “triple dog dare”, but I guess she never watched A Christmas Story!), Devon sneaks away from her boyfriend one night to check out the strip bar. Needing the extra money and not finding any real acting jobs, Devon decides to join Ginger at the club, and within a month is feature dancing herself. But the story (written by both Andrews and Beth Ann Rafael) doesn’t sugarcoat the world of stripping, nor does it paint it out to be degrading either. It walks a fine line between being both appealing and unappetizing, and the honesty of the storyline is what makes Devon Stripped so interesting to watch. Like all strip clubs, this one has a somewhat seedy owner (played by Herschel Savage), who takes advantage of the girls who work for him (don’t miss the fantastic scene where Herschel “takes advantage” of Monica Sweetheart!). Savage does a fine job in his role, never going over the top or becoming too “evil”, but being just sleazy enough for the viewer to dislike him…but not despise him. As for the sexual action, there’s an opening scene with Devon and Barrett B. (who plays her boyfriend) that is slow and erotic, yet still very hardcore. Also, in addition to the Savage/Sweetheart scene at the strip club, there’s a lesbian scene in the club’s bathroom between Monica Mayhem and (I believe) Nakita Kash; an additional lesbian scene with Devon and Holly Hollywood on the bar of the club; and a final coupling that finds Devon making out with Julian. In addition to the hardcore sex, there are also a number of dance routines and lap dances (mainly featuring Ginger Lynn and Devon, although not together) that may be the next best thing to seeing either of these performers live at a local club. On the humorous side, fans won’t want to miss the multiple cameos in Devon Stripped by the likes of April, Anthony Crane, Robby D., and director Nic Andrews himself – just to name a few. Devon Stripped begins with the words “Based On A True Story”, but the fact of the matter is that Andrews’ film is based on many true stories, as it tells the tale of a woman who is an aspiring actress and finds herself lured into the world of stripping and sex. But there’s no preaching by the director here – leaving it up to the viewer as to whether the path that Devon’s character has taken is good, bad or simply the way life is. This review comes from a screener copy of Devon Stripped, so I have not yet had the chance to see how the DVD will ultimately look, although Digital Playground has a reputation for top-notch video/audio quality, as well as a wealth of features on their discs. The DVD version is supposed to have behind the scenes footage and photos, a director’s commentary, bloopers, the original trailer and more. Well written, visually stunning and with a performance that should propel Devon into superstardom in the adult business (if indeed, she not there already), Devon Stripped is the kind of adult feature I hope for every time I slide a DVD into my player or a video into my VCR.
